Artist Statement

Art has always been my passion.  I knew since high school that whatever I did as a job or career was going to involve art in some way.  Becoming an art teacher was the perfect way for me to continue working with and exploring the arts, but also a way for me to share this passion with others.

I have a deep appreciation for the representation of the human form in art, from realistic to abstract and in all media.  My favorite sculptural artist has always been Henry Moore and I based a lesson in sculpture around his work.  After doing this for a number of years and becoming even more fascinated with the process, I decided it was time to make some work of my own.  I started with Pine that was kiln dried and carved a few pieces of various sizes.  It wasn’t long before I was looking for and experimenting with different materials; such as sandstone, clay and concrete.

The idea behind the figures I make is basic and carries into each piece.  I strive to make a form that I feel represents the human figure, but in its most simple state.  This is sometimes done with one or two different elements, but can include more also.  These elements or forms will be either organic in nature or even simple geometric shapes.  I typically include a spherical form to represent the head, but not always.  Lately, I have combined my love of nature with my sculptures, creating concrete figures meant to be outside and part of the regular landscape.  I like the fact that some people will see the figure right away, while others might just see some rocks.  One of the things I like most about working with concrete, is that I can create any size, shape or color for what I’m doing, it’s strong and can endure the worst weather while outside.
